What Should You Wear to a Pottery Class?

Booking your first pottery class is exciting, but it's completely normal to wonder what you should wear before you arrive. One of the most common questions we receive at Andrew Walker Ceramics is whether you need special clothing or equipment. The good news is that you probably already have everything you need.

Wear Clothes You Feel Comfortable In

Pottery is a hands-on activity, so comfort is far more important than fashion. Choose clothes that allow you to move freely, especially around your arms and shoulders. Loose-fitting tops, T-shirts, jumpers (with sleeves that you can roll up) and comfortable trousers all work well. There's no need to wear specialist clothing.

Don't Worry About Getting Dirty

Clay is surprisingly easy to wash out of clothes. While pottery can get a little messy, the clay we use is water-based and usually washes away without difficulty. Many students arrive expecting to leave covered in clay, but it's often much cleaner than they imagined.

If you have a favourite white shirt or delicate fabrics, it might be worth choosing something else, just to be on the safe side.

Wear Comfortable Shoes

You'll be standing and moving around the studio during parts of the workshop, so comfortable, closed-toe shoes are ideal.

There's no need for safety boots or anything technical—simply wear shoes you'd be happy spending a few hours in.

Should You Bring an Apron?

If you feeling more comfortable wearing an apron feel free to bring your own to the studio. For those students who are throwing on the wheel and it’s your first time; you’ll probably spray wet clay in multiple directions so an apron can be extremely useful. Full length throwing aprons are provided.

Nothing at all.

What Happens During the Class?

Your session begins with an introduction to the project and the techniques you'll be using.

You'll then be guided through each stage, with plenty of time to ask questions and develop your ideas. Whether you're creating a bowl, vase, serving dish or sculptural piece, you'll receive support throughout the workshop.

No previous experience is required.
